On May 16, 2025, an international conference was held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan

On 16 May 2025 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, an international conference was held on the theme: ‘Protection of biodiversity and ecosystems in the Republic of Tajikistan – potential for cooperation between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Tajikistan’.

The Director of the Kyrgyz-German Institute under K.I.Skryabin KNAU Dr. Umetov Kenzhebai participated in this conference and made a presentation on ‘Regional management and value creation for biodiversity and ecosystem services in Kyrgyzstan (ALMA-KiKa) – the example of Asian wild apple tree ’Malus Sieversii”.

The President of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan Prof. Kobiljon Khushvakhtzoda, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Dushanbe York Schugraf made welcoming speeches.

Further presentations were made by:

  • Dr. Matthias Kramer, Dresden University of Technology; NETSCI GmbH, Managing Director, on the topic: Biodiversity and Ecosystem Service Requirements in the Anthropocene Era;
  • Ikhitiyor Bobojonov, IAMO, Senior Researcher; Head of the VW Chair of International Agricultural Economics at Tashkent State Agrarian University and Co-coordinator of the Insurance Laboratory at Tashkent State University of Economics;
  • Thomas Glauben, Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Development in Countries in Transition (IAMO), Director, on the topic: Environmental changes and their impact on agriculture and natural resources – proposals for sustainable land use, climate protection and nature conservation on the example of the Republic of Tajikistan;
  • Henryk Flachowski, Julius Kühn Institute (JKI), Institute for Fruit Breeding Research, Institute Director, on the topic: Potential of fruit genetic resources in Central Asia and Tajikistan, in particular the potential of fruit genetic resources in Central Asia and Tajikistan.
  • Dr. Mikhail Kramer, Akibadem International Medical Centre (TIMC), Tashkent, Director, with the topic: Loss of ecosystem services and their impact on human health – the example of air and water pollutants;
  • Karl-Heinz Feger, Dresden University of Technology, Institute of Soil Science and Site Ecology, Senior Professor; former President of the German Society of Soil Scientists, with the topic: Land use and climate change impacts on soil and water ecosystem services – requirements for integrated watershed management for the Republic of Tajikistan;
  • Uta Steinhardt, University of Sustainable Development Eberswalde (HNEE), Vice-President for Research and Teaching; International Association of Landscape Ecology – Germany, Vice-Chair, with the topic: Landscape use and nature conservation through organic farming and marketing – potential for the Republic of Tajikistan;
  • Dr. Andreas Schneider, Development Bank, Rehabilitation Credit Corporation (KfW), KfW Regional Office for Central Asia, Director, with the topic: Cooperation projects with Tajikistan in the field of landscape management and conservation;
  • Daniel Gereke, Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), Regional Programme ‘Integrative and Climate Sensitive Land Use in Central Asia’ – ILUCA, Project Manager, Protection through Use – Examples of Sustainable Forest and Agricultural Management in the Republic of Tajikistan;
  • Peter Liebelt, Central Asian Sustainable Innovation Bureau (CASIB), Office Director, with the topic: International Partnerships in Sustainable Innovation – Cooperation Projects with Tajikistan.

At the end of the conference, the Tajik-German Institute for the Protection of Biodiversity and Ecosystems was inaugurated.

Then the delegation arrived to the city of Nukus, Karakalpakstan, where the second conference was held on 19 May at the Karakalpak State University named after Berdakh.

At this conference, welcoming speeches were delivered by:

  • Aliya Aktymbaeva, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University KAZNU Almaty, Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences, Dean.

At the end of the conference, the Uzbek-German Institute for the Protection of Biodiversity and Ecosystems was inaugurated.
